Enhancing Your Home With New Solar Panels

by Glenda Walters

The installation of solar panels can be a major improvement to your home's electrical system. If you are making some common assumptions about solar panel systems, it can be much harder to determine whether they will be a good addition for you to make to your house.

Assumption: Solar Panels Do Not Provide Reliable Energy Output

There are many assumptions that people can make about the energy output and reliability of solar panel systems. For example, it is often assumed that these systems will not be suitable for areas that regularly experience cloudy days. The reality is that solar panel systems operate by capturing the sun's ultraviolet light. This will allow the system to continue generating power even when the sky is not sunny. This can make these panels a reliable option for effectively providing your home with supplemental power.

Assumption: Your Roof Will Always Need To Be Reinforced Before Installing The Solar Panels

Solar panel systems will add some weight to your home's roof. However, the amount of weight that they add will generally be fairly minimal. As a result, you may be able to avoid needing to reinforce the roof in order for the solar panels to be safely installed. An installation contractor can assess your roof to determine whether or not reinforcing it is advisable. If this is necessary, the costs and work involved will likely be relatively minimal. Unfortunately, some homeowners may discover during the initial preparation for installing solar panels that their roof's supports have become damaged. If this is the case with your roof, this damage will have to be repaired before the solar panels can be safely installed.

Assumption: It Is Only Worth Installing These Panels If You Cover The Entire Roof In Them

Individuals will often make the mistake of overestimating the number of solar panels that they will need to install on their roofs. Often, a person may assume that they will have to cover the entire roof with these panels. While the number of solar panels that you apply to the roof can impact the overall energy output, high-capacity solar panels can make it possible to meaningfully supplement your home's electrical supply with only a few solar panels. As part of the process of preparing to make this upgrade, you will want to estimate the total amount of power that you are needing from the panels so you can know the output capacity that you will need from each panel and the number of panels that should be installed.
